Welcome back to From Diagnosis Forward, a podcast from the Down Syndrome Diagnosis Network. If you're joining us for the first time, this podcast is a collection of real stories and experiences from parents raising children with Down syndrome. In each episode, we begin with a question that we ask within our community and we bring those voices together here. We believe that there is incredible power in hearing from people who have been where you may be now. This is our second episode. In our first episode, we focused on prenatal diagnoses and we heard from parents about what helped them process that news and then prepare to welcome their baby. Today we're focusing on a different experience. We're focusing on families who receive the diagnosis unexpectedly at birth. Before we begin, we also want to remind you that this podcast isn't polished or fancy, and that's intentional. These are real parents sharing real experiences, sometimes emotional, sometimes it's hopeful, sometimes it's messy, but it's always going to be authentic. Now, for many parents, what may have started as excitement and anticipation at the birth of their child quickly became a moment that was filled with uncertainty, fear, could have been confusion, and sometimes even grief. If that was your experience, we want you to know that those feelings are valid. In this episode, the question that we asked is what helped you process that very unexpected news and move forward after receiving a birth diagnosis of Down syndrome. You're going to hear many different perspectives and experiences in these stories, and what families believe, what they lean in on, can look so different. These stories belong to the parents that share them. But here at DSDN, we support all families without judgment and we create spaces for connection no matter what that journey looks like. If you're in this moment right now, navigating a new diagnosis, maybe you just had your baby and you received an unexpected diagnosis. We're really glad that you're here. Hi, my name is Julie, mom to Briella, who just turned a year old. I'm gonna say I received a post-birth diagnosis because technically and medically that's true, even though I had a positive NIP result at 12 weeks, but we didn't confirm with an amnio and she had zero soft markers. So honestly, I delayed processing it until she was born. And when I saw her, I knew that my beautiful, precious, premature baby undeniably had Down syndrome. So, in terms of things that I did that helped, I read some books, and my favorite was The Lucky Few by Heather Avis, which I highly recommend. But the one event that stood out to me the most in terms of support I received was one of my babies, NICU nurses, gave us a little set of gifts just out of the blue, including two kids' books on Down syndrome for her big sissies. Um, and with she included the sweetest notes in it. And that simple act just brought me to tears. I think one thing that is hard in facing the diagnosis is the silence. I think people near you can be afraid of saying the wrong thing, so they just don't say anything at all. And I totally understand that I can do that as well. But her simple act of celebrating Briella, including her diagnosis, just broke me. It was the single best gift I ever received.

Voy a decir que recibí un diagnóstico después del nacimiento porque técnica y médicamente es cierto, aunque tuve un resultado positivo en la prueba NIP a las 12 semanas, pero no lo confirmamos con una amniocentesis y no tenía marcadores blandos. Así que, honestamente, tardé en asimilarlo hasta que nació. Y cuando la vi, supe que mi hermosa, preciosa y prematura bebé tenía síndrome de Down sin lugar a dudas. Hi, I'm Tericina, mom to my who's four years old. Down syndrome wasn't even on my radar since I had done NIPT testing and every ultrasound and prenatal scan I had done had no indicators. So when the pediatrician came in to do her exam and noted that my head low muscle tone and the physical features of a child with Down syndrome, my world was completely turned upside down. And the following days, the NICU nurses became our guardian angels, taking care of Maya and honestly, my husband and I. They shared as much knowledge as they knew about Down syndrome. And they also made a beautiful little sign that we have framed in our office today that says, Thank you for all that you do. Love Maya once the diagnosis was confirmed with genetics. When we left the hospital, although we were nervous wrecks, we were armed with the immense resources that the children's hospital of Philadelphia had to offer, and our beautiful little girl.

We were in shock and couldn't believe that our baby had a life-changing condition. Our pediatrician at the hospital could have cared less and offered no support to two new young parents during a time of uncertainty. And we were facing it all alone with no family. We were handed horribly printed black and white copies of pages stapled together with info about Down syndrome, but no actual connection or support during such a hard time. Our first glimpse of hope came from my wife's OB, who visited us after Maverick's initial diagnosis, and she cried with us. She knew we were facing something we never expected, and she gave us hope and offered us support by giving us the number to a close friend of hers who has a child with Down syndrome. We left the hospital stuck at home because of COVID with a newborn, facing the uncertainty of what Maverick's life looked like and what it was to have Down syndrome. So I began researching and looking for connections to the Down syndrome community. And I landed on DSDN in the awesome online community that was growing. I didn't dive right in, chatting and posting in the online groups, but I was able to see what other families were facing with children with Down syndrome. I knew with this connection and resource that everything was gonna be okay, that life may not be what we expected, but Maverick was gonna be a bright light in it.

Estábamos en estado de shock y no podíamos creer que nuestro bebé tuviera una condición que le cambiaría la vida. A nuestro pediatra en el hospital no le importó en absoluto y no nos ofreció ningún apoyo a dos padres jóvenes en un momento de incertidumbre. Y lo estábamos afrontando todo solos, sin familia. Hi, I'm Carrie and I'm mom to Alice, who's 10 months old. Honestly, what helped me the most after Alice was born was connecting with my local Down syndrome society group. I didn't connect with them until after the blood test confirmed her diagnosis. In that two-week window, I was constantly going back and forth between thinking she had Down syndrome, doubting her diagnosis, and dismissing her teachers. Once I connected with the group and was able to talk to other moms who were never thinking, I was going through it at that moment in time. It made me feel less lonely and it invalidated my feelings, even the negative ones. I felt less guilty for having those feelings of grief instead of joy. This really was the first step to accepting Alice and this new version of motherhood that was about to take on. Without it, I don't know how I would have gotten through those first couple of months. And I would have absolutely regretted feeling depressed and lonely and wasting those precious newborn days, feeling sorry for myself instead of enjoying my sweet little baby girl.

Hola, soy Carrie y soy mamá de Alice, que tiene 10 meses. Sinceramente, lo que más me ayudó después del nacimiento de Alice fue conectar con el grupo local de la asociación de síndrome de Down. No me puse en contacto con ellos hasta después de que el análisis de sangre confirmara su diagnóstico. Durante esas dos semanas, no paraba de dudar de que tuviera síndrome de Down, de cuestionar su diagnóstico y de desestimar a sus maestras. Hello, my name is Becky, mother to Liam, who is now 10. And when Liam came into the world, we didn't know anything about him. We didn't know about the diagnosis. We didn't know he needed a heart surgery. So his entry was very fast, very emergency-centered, and very frightening. And the doctors didn't help with that in our first hospital. Liam ended up being flown to a local children's hospital away from where we were, so we had to drive. And when we arrived to the doctor, the doctor stopped us and he let us know yes, there's a lot of unknowns with Liam. They were working with those. But our job in that moment was to love Liam, that our love for Liam was his best medicine. And that reminder has stayed with us through all of those rough patches of growing up that Liam needs our love and we can do that. So we're empowered by getting to be his parents.

Hi, I'm Kristen Crum, mom to Trevor, who was nine years old. I remember his diagnosis like it was yesterday. Trevor was in the NICU for observation, and our pediatrician walked in to deliver the news. I immediately broke down crying, but he stayed very positive and encouraging. I remember saying how our life was over, oh, how I was wrong, and he told me this changes nothing. He said I will love him and care for him just like his older brother. It will just take him a little longer to learn things. When he left, I spent a lot of time online trying to find support. I didn't know anyone personally to reach out to. Within three weeks of his birth, I found DSDN and the support I was longing for. Having other moms who understood the feelings I was having helped me to not feel so alone on this journey.

One thing that comes up so often in these stories is the uncertainty that parents feel about the future. What is life going to look like for them as a family, for their child? What kind of future will your baby have? And in those early moments, it doesn't always feel like there's answers available. This next story comes from a mom that's looking back after 30 years of raising her son and sharing the ways that he has continued to change lives around him. And maybe if we could know these parts of the story at the time of diagnosis, it would change how we see the road ahead.

Un tema recurrente en estas historias es la incertidumbre que sienten los padres sobre el futuro. ¿Cómo será la vida para ellos como familia, para su hijo? ¿Qué futuro le espera a su bebé? Y en esos primeros momentos, no siempre parece haber respuestas. As we work through those emotions, we are so focused on how they may not be accepted that we don't understand the thousands of lives they will impact positively. I recently published a book about our journey called Big People Don't Be in the Park. We were featured in a local newspaper, and when this went to print, I was surprised to receive a message from a young lady who shared she was my son's peer tutor in high school over 17 years ago. Her message started out with this your son changed my life and shaped my future. He brightened her day with his smile and positivity every single day. They loved singing and laughing together, and she even convinced the drill team to nominate him for Homecoming King. After high school, she decided to work at a care center for individuals with disabilities and ultimately decided to major in special education. She is now a special ed teacher in high school, and at the beginning of each year, she shares her story with her peer tutors and how they will be impacted by our children. 17 years ago, my son began to shape the future of one person, which has had a ripple effect. When people ask her why she chose that career, my son is her why. Wow, that is such a huge and beautiful thing to hear as a mom. So rewarding.

Mientras lidiamos con esas emociones, estamos tan enfocados en cómo podrían no ser aceptadas que no comprendemos las miles de vidas que impactarán positivamente. Recientemente publiqué un libro sobre nuestra experiencia llamado "Los grandes no están en el parque". Salimos en un periódico local, y cuando se imprimió, me sorprendió recibir un mensaje de una joven que compartió que fue la tutora de mi hijo en la escuela secundaria hace más de 17 años. Su mensaje comenzaba con esto: "Tu hijo cambió mi vida y moldeó mi futuro". Él alegraba su día con su sonrisa y positividad todos los días. Les encantaba cantar y reír juntos, e incluso convenció al equipo de porristas para que lo nominaran para Rey del Baile de Bienvenida.
